The First Burger

A soft, toasted bun… crisp, cool lettuce…sweet,vine-ripened tomatoes… and in the middle of it all, a juicy seasoned beef patty. Widely hailed as “America’s favorite food,” the history of the hamburger is filled with mythology.

Some say that it was the Mongols that first served the first ever hamburger. They were a fast-moving, calvary-based army that rode small sturdy ponies, sometimes days without ever dismounting and had little opportunity to stop and rest. As the army needed food that could be carried on their mounts and eaten easily with one hand while they rode, ground meat was the perfect choice. They softened the meat by placing them under the saddles of their horses while riding into battle.  When it was time to eat, the meat would be eaten raw, having been tenderized by the saddle and the back of the horse.

When Genghis Khan’s grandson, Khubilai Khan, invaded Moscow, they naturally brought their unique dietary ground meat with them and the Russians adopted it into their own cuisine, where German Immigrants introduce it in New York and Chicago where they earned a living by opening a restaurant.
